Conservatory roof film is solar control film applied to the glazing above you rather than the windows around you. It exists because a conservatory overheats mainly through its roof, which faces the sky and takes the most direct sun of any surface in the building.
The usual complaint is a room that was expensive to build and is unusable for a good part of the year: too hot to sit in from late morning through the afternoon in summer, with glare that makes a television or laptop unreadable.
Why the roof matters more than the walls
The vertical glazing in a conservatory only receives direct sun for part of the day and at an angle. The roof faces upward and takes the sun for most of the day at a far more direct angle, which is why treating the side windows alone rarely fixes an overheating conservatory. Film applied to the roof glazing addresses the surface actually responsible for most of the heat gain.
The alternative to replacing the roof
The other routes to fixing an overheating conservatory are a replacement solid or tiled roof, or a full set of made-to-measure roof blinds. Both work. Both cost substantially more than film and both change the room permanently, with a solid roof also removing the light that was the point of the conservatory in the first place. Film is the least invasive of the three.
Polycarbonate and glass roofs
Conservatory roofs are usually either glass or polycarbonate, and the two behave differently. The glazing type affects which films are suitable and how they are fitted. We establish what your roof is made of before quoting, because recommending a film without knowing that is guesswork.
Access and fitting
Roof glazing is fitted from inside, working overhead, which is slower and more demanding than fitting a vertical window. We will be straightforward about how long the job will take and what access we need. Send photographs of the conservatory from inside and out and we can usually assess it from those.

Will film alone make my conservatory usable in summer?
It will noticeably reduce heat gain and glare, and for many conservatories that is the difference between unusable and comfortable. It is not air conditioning. If a conservatory has no ventilation at all, film works best combined with opening vents or a roof window.
Can film be applied to a polycarbonate roof?
It depends on the panel type and condition. Polycarbonate and glass do not behave the same way, so we confirm which you have before recommending a product. We would rather tell you film is unsuitable than fit something that fails.
How does this compare to a solid replacement roof?
A solid roof gives the biggest temperature change but is a far larger job, costs considerably more, and removes the overhead light that makes a conservatory a conservatory. Film is cheaper, quicker, reversible and keeps the light. Which is right depends on how you want to use the room.
Does it help with glare as well as heat?
Yes. Overhead glare is one of the most common complaints in a glazed roof, particularly for anyone trying to watch a screen. Solar film reduces glare alongside heat gain.
